Voice and electronics research

In the context of free improvisation and contemporary music, my interest on extended vocal techniques led me to research about the combination of voice and electronics. At the moment I am working on developping a performance interface that explores the possibilities of the organic human voice and its electronic counterpart. My extended instrument consists of a glove with sensors and an Ipson Lab that translates datas and send them to a Max/Msp patch. This instrument was realised with the help of Johan van Kriej and Lex van der Brook. This approach allows me to transform the voice in real time in an organic way, quite close to an acoustic setup.
As a composer I am working on several pieces combining voice and electronics. Currently I am interested in exploring different areas such as spatialisation, real time transformation, systematic compostional approaches.

Improvised music

Diving into the broad field of improvised and contemporary music, my research is based on the creation of new sounds, by exploring the possibilities of uncommun instrumentations, combining acoustic and electronic sound domains. During those last years, I had the opportunity to work with fantastic improvisers. Currently I continue this exploration on free improvisation and perform regulary improvised music by forming groups of varying size, instrumentation and line-up. This flexible format ranges from solo performance, to duets, quartets, and bigger ensembles. Groups have included a duet with Renato Ferreira (double bass), a quartet Yolanda Uriz (flutes), Angelica Vasquez (harp), Corne Roos (double bass), a trio with Wen Chin Fu (cello), Nicolau Lafeta (trumpet).

Collaborations with composers and contemporary music

Since I moved to the Netherlands in 2006, I had the opportunity to work with fantastic and inspiring composers, collaborating on different levels for their compositions. First of all I would like to mention the piece for fixed media "Voyage dans l'espace" (march 2011) composed by Kees Tazelaar, and which has been such an inspiring experience. It is possible to find more information about the piece and about Kees Tazelaar's work at www.keestazelaar.com.
I would like also to mention few other pieces:
"L'imaginaire du parleur" (october 2011, composed at GRM) and "Duality" (april 2011); both pieces were composed together with Bjarni Gunnarsson
"In other words" (september 2009) and "Glossolalia" (june 2011), live pieces for voice and live electronics composed by Robert Blatt, Glossolalia being written especially for my voice
"Moments under the sunlight", tape piece using recordings of my voice (january 2010) composed by Sophocles Arvanitis,
"Ascent" composed by Yannis Kyriakides and that I performed in may 2010 with MAE Ensemble in Orgelpark, Amsterdam.
Currently I am working with Ji Youn Kang, fantastic composer from Corea, and Mey Yi Lee (percussions), on a piece for live electronics, percussions and voice, that will be presented in december 2011 at Studio Loos.

I also perform frequently contemporary music by Georges Aperghis, Luciano Berio, Cathy Berberian, John Cage, Georges Crumb, Morton Feldrman, Meredith Monk, Luigi Nono.

MGBG

MGBG is a collaboration project with Bjarni Gunnarsson (electronics). After working for the last two years on composing tape pieces and creating experimental electronic audio performances, we just released our first album "Korabie" which is now available in bandcamp .
The interplay between us creates a dense palette of sounds, derived from voice, field recordings, original designed sounds, and acoustic instruments.

Royal Improvisers Orchestra

The Royal Improvisers Orchestra comprises musicians from all over the world who come from various musical backgrounds ranging from baroque to noise-rock. It works with a system of conduction signs and each piece is conducted by a member of the orchestra. Neither fully improvised nor completely controlled, this format creates an environment where all egos must work together to try and achieve the common goal of making music.
